Deep Dive #2: What is Wealth?

Wealth - It’s not just money, it’s who you are and what you know.

One of the main reasons people don’t make a plan is they don’t think they have “enough” to pass on (hot take: You Are Enough). Even if me, your mom, and your grandma tell you that you’re worthy, you still might be thinking:

“Oh, no one wants my collection.”

“My car is paid for, but it’s old…”

“I just have this little savings account.”

“My family can figure out how to split it all up.”

“I just have my stories and recipes…”

Hopefully you’ve started the conversation and know that your family wants to respect your wishes, whatever the are. But first you have to write down your wealth and think about who might want to receive those gifts. Let’s take a look at the list again.

“My collection is worth about $3000 - my family should know they can sell it and use the proceeds for my memorial.”

“My car is paid for and could help my niece get to school and work. I want her to have it.”

“My little savings account can start a college fund for my grandson. I want my daughter to do that.”

“I don’t want my family to worry - all my clothes should be donated, but my designer handbags should go to my bestie.”

“I know my kids love my sweet potato pie and potato salad - I want them to have this video of me cooking with the recipe, so they’ll always think of me.” (True Story: We lost those recipes when my sister-in-law passed away.)

Has this helped you reframe your definition of wealth? Don’t forget all of the wealth you’ve accumulated in your life - love, friends, memories, and stories. That’s wealth too. Pass it on. Click the link to download a worksheet to get started today!
